Religious Education

Religious Education is taught to all pupils, this is in accordance with the Education Reform Act of 1988.  RE is also part of the curriculum at Canons High School as it allows the students the opportunity to better understand the diverse and cosmopolitan society in which they live.  The teaching follows the Harrow Agreed Syllabus for RE.

How will I Learn?

RE will be taught in tutor groups.  Each class will receive a 1 hour lesson per week.  Wherever the timetable permits, the same teacher will be taking the subject throughout Years 8 & 9.

Students will learn through a combination of group work, discussions, projects and individual written work, both at school and at home.  Support, from the Learning Development Department, will be give to those students with specific learning difficulties.

What Will I Learn?

RE in the lower school is split into two halves:

Year 8

  • students will be introduced to the concept that religion plays an important part in all our lives regardless of colour, creed or belief in God
  • students will discover reasons for and against the existence of God
  • students will study a variety of religious creation stories
  • students will investigate the use of symbols in both the secular and religious worlds.

To aid learning students will be asked to share their own beliefs and ideas concerning God, his existence and role in our everyday lives.

Year 9

In Year 9 students will explore in greater depth four of the six major world religions:

  • Hinduism
  • Judaism
  • Buddhism
  • Christianity
  • Islam
  • Sikhism.

RE in the Upper School

All upper school students are encouraged to take RE as a GCSE subject.  Their results over the past years have been very impressive, being well above the national average.  The students will follow the Southern Examining Group's Syllabus B.  Students are to follow a course in the thematic study of world faiths.  Two faiths will be selected and the students will be encouraged to study a number of themes indepth.

Themes to be investigated Include:

  • Place of Worship
  • Sacred Writing
  • Pilgrimages
  • Festivals Ceremonies
  • Worship and Moral Issues.

The course consists of 20% coursework and 80% examination.

RE in Humanities

To fulfil the national requirements, all upper school students have to take Humanities, in which they compare moral issues in two world religions.
