Physical Education at Canons High School .
Mr. Chowdhury, Mrs Morcombe, Mr Butcher and Miss Howick welcome you on behalf of the PE Department.
The PE Department give each pupil the opportunity to experience and enjoy different sporting activities that will promote the development of a wide variety of skills.
Pupils will develop social skills, observe and appreciate the works of others and also will learn to work co-operatively as part of a team and learn leadership skills.
The PE department encourage safe practice when working with others and the correct handling of equipment. We expect each pupil to wear the correct PE kit for every lesson. As part of safe practise we ensure students remove jewellery prior to activity and also encourage students to understand the importance of hygiene i.e. showering after activity. In Key stage three pupils are encouraged to participate in different activities. As they progress to Key Stage four they are encouraged to specialise in two different areas of activities. At the end of each activity students progress is assessed. This is achieved by a pupils self-assessment as well as the teachers assessment. These are regularly monitored and recorded in a central file. Pupils are encouraged to support each other to develop their own learning.
In Key Stage 4 pupils can opt to take GCSE PE. This course lasts for a duration of two years and pupils can achieve a GCSE grade. The syllabus we follow is AQA and it is divided into theory and practical work whereby the practical part is worth 60% and the theory 40% of the final grade. Please see GCSE PE web page for information.
The PE department provides an extended programme through extra-curricular activities. On a regular basis the PE department run lunchtime and after school programmes and students can take part in a range of sports on a weekly basis. We compete in different activities against other local schools and County schools. The PE department also has links with other local clubs and send pupils to represent the County and District in a variety of sporting activities. Please see the extra-curricular web page for further information.
