Nutritional Guidelines

WE COMPLY......

WITH THE NUTRITIONAL GUIDELINES AT CANONS HIGH SCHOOL

In order to ensure that our children are receiving nutritionally balanced meals and that diet-related health issues are addressed, the government have enforced the following:

  • No confectionery and crisps at lunchtime
  • No sweetened drinks
  • Limited processed meat items
  • Fried items to be served twice per week
  • Protein-rich red meats to be available at least twice per week
  • Fish available once per week, oily fish available once every three weeks
  • Vegetables available daily to allow at least one portion to be consumed
  • Fresh fruit available daily to allow at lest one portion to be consumed
  • Fruit based desserts to be offered at least twice per week
  • Water, pure fruit juice, milk and yoghurt based drinks, tea and coffee are the only allowable drinks.

The school has worked cooperatively with our caters, Duchy Catering, to ensure that we not only comply with the nutritional guidelines but exceed the requirements.

In September 2007, a brand new menu cycle was introduced, with break-time health-bites and good snacks such as homemade popcorn, granola bars and exotic dried fruit.  The hot lunch range includes traditional themes like Roast Dinner Days and world-wide selections such as Chicken Tortilla Wraps and Creamy Vegetable Curry.

The school has achieved Healthy School Status and it is hoped that parents will support us by ensuring that the contents of their child's lunch box and any food or drink brought into the school reflects this.  We suggest swapping crisps and chocolate for cheese and biscuits, fruit, yoghurts, boxes of raisins, dried fruit snacks and cookies/cakes that are not all chocolate coated.

Examples of Meal Deals on offer to all pupils including those entitled to free school meals are as follows:

  • Assorted Pasta King Meals
  • Chicken Joe's (Halal) Meals
  • Jacket Potatoes, salads and fruit juices
  • Traditional meals of the day, which include potatoes and vegetables or salad.
