Community
Participation, Excellence and Enjoyment
At Canons, we provide a range of opportunities for our pupils to learn and develop, both in and out of school. Pupils' interest and talents are encouraged on the playing field, in the performing arts, and in the local and wider communities. The school runs breakfast and after school clubs, in addition to lunchtime activities.
Pupils at the school are encouraged to take part in sports and games where valuable lessons of physical well being and collaboration can be learned. The following activities are played regularly in organised clubs, after school and at lunchtime: football, cricket, basketball, tennis, netball, rounders, track and field athletics, gymnastics, badminton, street dance, volleyball, table tennis and Tae Kwon Do.
We have recently had lottery funding to improve our existing facilities and to create a brand new fitness suite for the school. The suite contains high quality equipment which all pupils will have the opportunity to use, and new changing and shower facilities. The local community also has the chance to use the fitness suite out of school hours.
The school has also established a Cricket Academy with high quality facilities and coaching available.
We have enjoyed considerable success in both team and individual sports in recent years; for example, our Year 9 athletics team have been borough champions, whilst one of our pupils became English Schools High Jump Champion. Our Year 11's won the borough cup this year and many of our pupils have represented both Harrow and Middlesex at football in recent years. The Year 9 girls' rounders team have also been borough champions and we recently won the girls' borough cricket tournament.
In the last four years, the school has set up a Peer Listening Scheme where staff and pupils have been trained by ‘Relate' to counsel young people who are having problems in school or being bullied. This scheme has been extremely successful, so much so that the school hosted a national conference on Peer Listening and we are delighted to say that we have been awarded the Princess Diana Youth Award yet again, as recognition of the excellent work taking place.
We have also recently achieved Eco School and Healthy School status and pupils are actively involved in developing a range of strategies and activities in support of this status.
All pupils have an opportunity to take part in residential trips and visits for education purposes from Year 8 onwards. They visit galleries and museums as part of the curriculum, take part in civic debates and have a two week experience of work in Year 11. The Duke of Edinburgh Award has proved very successful this year and we now have three experienced expedition leaders on the staff of the school.
We have a growing number of musical groups who sing and perform in a wide variety of styles, embracing both popular and classical music and reflecting the diverse cultural and musical background of our community. In addition, a group of pupils have taken part in a street dance project, and we are also preparing for our school production of ‘Fame' later this year.
